Tyre Nichols was an African-American man who died on January 10, 2023, three days after a traffic stop by officers from the Memphis Police Department.
Per the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the 29-year-old Nichols was initially stopped on January 7 for reckless driving. The TBI said there were two confrontations.
According to authorities, the first happened as officers approached the vehicle and he attempted to flee on foot. They said the second confrontation occurred when officers tried to arrest him.
Nichols complained of having shortness of breath, and an ambulance was called. An autopsy commissioned by Tyre Nichols’ family found he suffered “extensive bleeding from severe beating.”
Following his death, an investigation was launched and all five of the police officers involved were arrested and charged with murder and other crimes. The TBI and United States Department of Justice have both opened investigations into Nichols’s death.
